Some questions eventually find answers.

Today, we are opening the doors to Open Mysteries, an international community for people who believe those questions are worth exploring.

Why Open Mysteries?

The internet is filled with fascinating stories about UFOs, unexplained phenomena, ancient civilizations and extraordinary experiences. Unfortunately, discussions about these subjects can quickly become divided between two extremes.

On one side, extraordinary claims are sometimes accepted without sufficient evidence. On the other, unusual ideas and experiences can be dismissed before they have even been properly examined.

Open Mysteries aims to provide another approach.

We believe it is possible to be open-minded without abandoning critical thinking.

We can explore extraordinary claims while asking difficult questions. We can examine evidence without deciding beforehand what the answer must be. And we can disagree with one another without turning a discussion into a personal conflict.

That philosophy lies at the heart of Open Mysteries.

What Do We Explore?

The unknown covers an enormous range of subjects, and Open Mysteries is designed to bring many of them together in one community.

Among the topics we explore are:

You don't need to believe that every strange light in the sky is an extraterrestrial spacecraft to belong here.

You also don't need to believe that every unexplained observation must have a conventional explanation.

Open Mysteries welcomes believers, skeptics, researchers and the simply curious.

What matters is not whether we begin with the same conclusions, but whether we are willing to listen, examine evidence, ask questions and treat one another with respect.

A skeptic may notice weaknesses in an argument that others have overlooked.

A believer may bring forward evidence or perspectives that deserve further investigation.

A researcher may provide important context.

And someone asking a simple question may cause everyone else to look at an old mystery in an entirely new way.

Different perspectives make discussions stronger when they are shared respectfully.

Facts, Theories and Speculation

Mysteries are fascinating precisely because we often don't have all the answers.

That also means we should be clear about what we know — and what we don't.

On Open Mysteries, we encourage members to distinguish between established facts, evidence, hypotheses, personal opinions, speculation and personal experiences.

Speculation is not forbidden. Far from it.

Some of humanity's greatest discoveries began with someone asking, What if?

But an interesting possibility is not automatically a proven fact.

Being able to explore possibilities while remaining honest about the available evidence is one of the principles we hope will define this community.
